My Placement for Coaching Pedagogy in Context is at St. Bartholomew’s C of E Primary school. Me and my other peers in my group will visit here every Friday morning 9-1pm. The Primary school is located in Armley in Leeds.

We are there to coach PE to the students in the primary school on a morning. We will be teaching reception PE all morning every Friday until further notice. The class size is around 30 children on average which is a larger class size than usual, this is due to being over 700 students which attend this Primary School. However in the classes a few of the students where English is their second language and some students have Special Educational Needs. Therefore they do not Speak much English at all.

Crime

Knowing the area we know that Armley is one of the poorest areas in Leeds. Therefore there is high crime rate. In January 2020 the amount of crimes recorded in the area was 95. These crimes ranged from Burglary, Criminal damage and Sexual assault, where 2 of the crimes happening at the street at the back of the school (Police.uk, 2020). In the area there is also Armley prison which is a category B prison where there are a range of prisoners held there for a variety of crimes. Facilities and Equipment

The Primary has a large school hall which will be available to use and there are several playgrounds arounds the grounds of the school which will also be available with various markings on the floor such as Hop Scotch which we may use in our Pe Lessons. On a Friday we will have use of the hall but also have the option to go outside dependant on the weather and the sport we are teaching. They have brand new equipment available which includes bean bags, variety sized balls, hula hoops and small hurdles which we can use in our sessions. In addition to this they also have equipment such as dice, parachutes and pancakes with numbers on that can be used for non-sport specific lessons that can be inclusive for all participants.

Peer coaches

In my group there are 2 other coaches that are both in their second year coaching at Leeds Beckett. Their main sports that they coach are Football, Netball and Cricket. They have experience in coaching a variety of age groups from university and coaching outside of University. With having 3 coaches it means that 1 coach is able to lead an activity and the other 2 coaches are able to support and make sure that all of the students are on task and can provide feedback and help them if necessary. In addition to this we also have assistance from the Sports coach and the classroom teachers who also attended the sessions so they are able to help if necessary.

School Values

  • Everyone contributes to school to create fulfilment and happy children and staff

  • By the end of their time at the school all students will feel like they have achieved and fulfilment and leave for high school as thriving individuals
